THE WEST COASTAL PLAINS
The West Coastal Plains is a narrow physical feature of South America. It lies between the coast of Pacific Ocean on the west and the Andes Mountains on the east. These plains are the widest in the northern parts of the continent. Atacama desert lies in this region. It is one of the driest deserts in the world. It lies in the middle on the coastal plain belt.
THE ATACAMA DESERT
The Atacama Desert lies on a high altitude. It is one of the few locations on Earth with 300+ days of clear skies in a year. The conditions are best for observatories because of no pollution. In recent years, the place has become home to many large telescopes in the world.
