BRAIN-EATING AMOEBA (Naegleria Fowleri)
NAEGLERIA FOWLERI
Naegleria Fowleri, more commonly known as Brain-Eating Amoeba due to the way it affects the brain, is a eukaryotic amoeba which is technically classified as a shapeshifting amoeboflagellate excavate.
This microbe is extremely lethal. It is mostly present in warm, untreated and contaminated water. When swimming/or water sports are done in these type of waters, the amoeba can affect a human being, affecting their brain. This amoeba entering the body is usually fatal. But don’t worry, just try to avoid warm waters which are contaminated. Chlorine kills this type of amoeba, which is the reason why swimming pools are treated with chlorine. Most of the time while swimming in non-chlorinated water, try not to breath the water up your nose or let it enter your mouth/ears, because that’s one way this dangerous little microorganism invades. It is good to have precautions and knowledge about this.
