WORLD ELEPHANT DAY

First, I’d like to start off by letting you know that I’m an animal lover. Especially wild animals. And second, Happy World Elephant Day!

Let’s celebrate this day by first learning some cool stuff about these wonderful organisms. 

Big brains

Have you heard the saying “an elephant never forgets”? If no, now you’ve heard it. If yes, have you ever wondered how true that statement is?

It’s not properly accurate to say that an elephant never forgets, but anyway, the pachyderms did evolve to remember facts and details that play an important role in their survival. For example, African elephants (Loxodonta Africana) can recognize the sounds made by different predators and retrace their steps to find water holes in the arid savanna and distinguish different members of their family/associates from a herd of hundreds of elephants.

Just like humans

Elephants are one of the world’s most intelligent creatures and a lot of their behaviors are eerily similar to things which humans do.

Mostly like humans, elephants are known to bury their dead and these altruistic animals also like lending a helping hand to other creatures they find in trouble, according to the World Conservation Society. 

A varied diet

Elephants apparently like changing what they each based on their preferences the same way we humans like to change what we eat for dinner each day. This phenomenon was also just discovered by accident while researchers were studying elephants in Kenya, says Live Science. 

Studies about them

Two groups of elephants were being studied by a group of global researchers in Kenya (info from Live Science) to see if they could find new ways to help elephant populations grow more sustainably but the research accidentally revealed a lot more about each group’s social behavior.
