How To Be Insensitive To Criticism

Recall the times when you were overthinking about someone else saying low things about you. I suppose some of you must have gotten really sensitive to it and began to doubt and question yourself, right? If not, I'm proud of you. If yes, don't worry about it, we'll solve your issues in this blog post.

To be honest, when people criticize me, I always do this:
  • Ask the person to teach me how to do it/how to behave if I am really wrong.
  • If they can't do that, IGNORE.
  • If they teach me, or if I realize myself that it's actually a mistake and they are not just trying to degrade me, I learn.
  • If they are actually trying to degrade me, bye bye, I don't care.
When someone criticizes you, they always have either of the two motives: to make you low OR to correct you. The example of the first is when people in your school or office criticize your work. An example of the latter is when teachers point out students' mistakes. So, next time when someone criticizes you, realize the underlying motive and react accordingly. If someone says you are no good, it won't change you. Either you ask them what you're supposed to correct and if they have no answer, ignore. Ignoring is half of the secret to being insensitive to criticism.
Sometimes you might see how another person is good at something and you aren't. I know how it feels when you start thinking about the fact that you can't do it and start questioning and doubting whether you got skill. I've felt that when I saw people who were better than me at sports. I'm not the type of person who likes sports (but I love exercising and working out). So, I started wondering if I have skill, but the point is I keep forgetting that I am good at studies! There is this saying too,
You cannot judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree.
The same way, if you take a pigeon and judge it by its ability to swim, you will think of it as useless. Just like how you use a pen to write and an eraser to erase. If you use a pen to erase and an eraser to write, of course it sounds like a bad idea.
If a person is good at singing but bad at dancing, they might feel low in front of a professional dancer. That doesn't mean they can't learn how to dance! If they want to, they can. Everything happens with practice and consistency. I'm sure Bill Gates never became the founder of Microsoft overnight, right?

So a final summary of what you need to learn:

People have two motives when it comes to criticism.
  • To make you feel low: You need to ignore this.
  • To correct you: You mustn't take it too personally, just correct yourself.
Now I hope half of your sadness is out of your head, because you eliminated the cause! 😃
